Preserve a World with Bees petition

preserve-a-world-with-bees_petitionPlease sign this petition to preserve a world with bees for this and future generations.

The stakes are too high, and Oregonians must take action now.

Join Beyond Toxics in asking the Oregon Legislature to take bee-killing neonicotinoids off consumer stores shelves. The Save Oregon Bees Act would ensure that consumers could no longer purchase neonicotinoid pesticides. Oregon already restricts over 400 dangerous pesticides, and neonicotinoids should also be included for restriction. They would be available for sale ONLY to certified applicators, farmers or veterinarians who must receive special training and have a license to use these products.

Restricting consumer use is one essential way to reduce these particularly dangerous and persistent neonicotinoids pesticides in the environment. [Read the petition text below]

Scientists have concluded that neonicotinoids are a key factor in bee declines. These extremely hazardous chemicals contaminate soils, wetlands and streams, thereby also harming other essential organisms. A group of global, independent scientists studying the impact of neonicotinoids have called for immediate regulatory action to restrict neonicotinoids.

Bees create the integrity of ecosystems. Without bees, 85% of all trees and flowers will not produce the flowers, fruit and seeds needed to create the next generation of plant life. Without pollination, the seeds, nuts and fruits of these plants, and the birds and mammals depending on them for food, will vanish.

Bees are essential for growing food. Bees pollinate 71 of the 100 crops that make up 90 percent of the world’s food supply.

Oregon benefits from over $600 million of insect-pollinated crops grown by Oregon farmers each year. Their crops include berries of all kinds; tree fruits such as apples, pears, and cherries; watermelons and onions; and alfalfa for Oregon’s dairy cows. Oregon’s entire farm production depends heavily on the pollination of both honey bees and native pollinators such as bumble bees.

States, municipalities, federal agencies and universities are taking steps to restrict neonicotinoids. In 2016, Maryland passed a law to take bee-killing neonicotinoids off consumer stores shelves by January 1st 2018!

We can protect bees! We must take action, for the bees and for the balance of the ecosystems that support all life. When you sign this petition, you are helping Save Oregon’s Bees by demanding specific action from the Oregon State Legislature.  Let’s make Oregon the second state to take necessary action to help get neonicotinoids out of the environment!
