You are invited to the opening of “Farm Labor in the Valley”, a bilingual, interactive exhibit at Springfield History Museum, 590 Main St., Springfield. The reception is Fri., July 10 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. during Second Friday Art Walk. Justice 3 will be performing songs related to the Farm Workers’ Rights Movement.
“Farm Labor in the Valley” will be on display from July 10 – December 26. The museum is open Thursday – Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Admission is free!
The exhibit features the history and diversity of farm workers in the Willamette Valley and Lane County from pre-colonization to the present. Informational panels focus on:
- Indigenous stewards and farmworkers
- Filipino workers in the hopyards
- Farm labor organizing in California and Oregon, 1933 – present
- Leaders of the Farm Workers’ Rights Movement
- Eugene Friends of the Farm Workers’ support for the United Farm Workers’ (UFW) boycotts
- UFW campaign against pesticides
- Local farm labor in Springfield and east rural Lane County
On display will be many artifacts collected by Eugene Friends of the Farm Workers, including a home movie from 1975 that features a Solidarity picket line at Safeway, a protest at the University of Oregon, and the March on Gallo in Modesto, CA.
